The development of the painting: Woman walking on beach

People say that a good approach to painting is to first complete a rough study before your final piece. As I often cut corners while working, I rarely do this. But for this particular piece, I decided to complete a rough study first and then approach a larger version second.

My preliminary smaller study (click here to see preliminary) preparation for this larger painting made me approach the larger canvas (36” x 36”) differently. As I worked on the painting, I continuously returned to the study to see if I had missed something in my final image. Some of my errors in preliminary study were simple (mis-drawing, etc.), but they ad a simple charm that I did not want to loose in the larger painting. The unity and color movement helped the piece hold entirely together. I did not want to loose any of this for I knew they would add a breath life into my large painting.

This experience made me realize the benefits of preparation when completing artwork. Completing a smaller painting allows you to work out the larger more obvious problems in your painting. This allows you to engage your larger painting with focused confidence, which keeps your image innovative and stimulating.
