Wake up! It seems obvious, but it’s one of God’s great gifts that we often take for granted!
Put on my exercise clothes that I laid out the night before. Then, clean up and head for the kitchen where I make a smoothie (see recipe below) and a cup of Earl Grey tea.
Drink half of my smoothie and clean up the kitchen. I then head toward the family room where I will read about 1 or 2 chapters of the Bible and talk to God about what’s going on in my life. He’s a great listener.
Then, I go downstairs to work out for about 30 minutes. I walk/run on the treadmill for as long as I can while watching TV. I think TV makes the treadmill less noticeable. Then, I work out with weights or bands for about 30 minutes. Our weight and overall health are sustained positively or negatively by our lifestyle and environment. I believe this directly affects how we feel and paint.
I head upstairs to finish the second half of my smoothie, and check and respond to e-mails.
While the light is good outside, I head to my easel and begin painting whatever I’ve decided to paint. I always enjoy the natural light on my canvas and pallet.
Later in the day, I stop for lunch and review my work while I eat.
Then, I go back to painting for as long as I feel interested. When I find myself not responding to my painting, I stop. I think it keeps my work fresh and alive, so I’m sensitive to this.
Then I’m back to reviewing emails, writing blog posts, working on my website or working on anything else I need to accomplish for the day.
Then, it’s dinner, and time with wife and family. Sometimes, I play some tennis. Then it’s off to bed after spreading my latest works across my wife’s dresser. By leaving them out, I give them time to dry . I also can review them this way, and if anything sticks out, I can tweak it the next day.
Finally, it’s time for sleep, so I’m ready for the next day.
This is just an idea of my average day as an artist. I obviously have some flexibility in my schedule, and am not hardened to a ritual. Flexibility allows you to experience life, which is an artist’s true inspiration.
Daryl Urig’s Daily Smoothie
1 cup water
1 tbsp flax seed
1 oz. (t tbsp) dark chocolate Nibs 88% cacao
1 tsp brewers yeast
1 tsp barley powder
1 tbsp raw honey
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8-1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 scoop whey protein powder
1 heaping cup of fresh or frozen berries and fruit
I use the Vitamix 5200 blender and it does a very good job of even grinding all of the seeds on high for about 2 minutes.
