Woman in the Garden Series - Studio - Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

    Monday, July 12th, 2010

Some of my fondest memories of childhood are of my mother working in her garden. It could have been her strong, ethereal connection during those moments, or maybe just the warm glow that laboring in the sun brings. Whatever it was, it imprinted a lasting memory of beauty in my mind.

One day, after observing my wife tending to our garden, I decided to bring my fond childhood memories to my artwork, and developed my “Women in the Garden” series. Each oil painting in this series depicts a woman doing different chores in the garden.

"Dancing Light" Awarded The Presidents Award from "The American Artists Professional League" 2008 Grand National Juried Exhibition

    See the complete series here:

I used loose brush strokes and vibrant colors with highly textured flowers on the foreground to add space to paint the images in this series. By using this technique, I created my series in the same vein as the Impressionists, like Monet.

In 1867, Monet finished a painting, entitled “Women in the Garden,” that depicted various women, including his wife, Camile, doing a variety of activities in a garden. This piece demonstrated the techniques of Impressionist artists, like loose brush strokes, blurred boundaries and vibrant colors.

In creating my series, I drew inspiration from Monet. His use of loose brush strokes and vibrant colors resonated with my wife and mother’s casual encounters with their gardens. Like Monet, I chose to paint each piece on a sunny day to capture the warmth of beautiful women tending to their gardens.

I hope you enjoy the artistic parallels my “Women in the Garden” series draws to Monet’s artwork. If you are in Chicago, please stop by the Hilligoss Galleries to view my series of paintings.

Portrait Society of America Award - Nov. 23, 2009 - Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

Against the Tide, Oil on Canvas

    Portrait Society of America

It was nice to be awarded an Honorable Mention Award for a recent Portrait Society of America exhibition in Columbus, Ohio on November 15th, 2009.

After walking in the show, one of my friends brought something to my attention. This was one piece I did for myself, and I had no idea how it would be received. Thankfully, it was very well received and helped me confirm that I was headed in the right direction with my painting.

Why Woman in the Garden? Nov. 16, 2009 - Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

    Monday, November 16th, 2009

I’ve often been asked what inspired, “Women in the Garden?”

I initially thought the answer was obvious, but when I thought about it, it was not so apparent. This is what I eventually came up with:

I have always loved gardening. My mother shared her love of gardening with me at an early age, as her father had shared it with her. My grandfather gave up his job as a chemist to open a nursery and sell flowers and plants. I can remember riding on his lap on the tractor, steering down the old gravel path, as a child. Even after his death, I helped my grandmother dig shrubs.

My new wife, Robyn, and I have a joint love of gardening, so we decided to make the backyard into our own sanctuary. Doing this, I recalled Monet and his love for his garden, so I made mine in his image.

After we got married, I decided to paint her in the garden. At first, she wasn’t willing to model or particularly agreeable while doing so. I think at first she was shy about being the central focus, but she finally grew into it.

My figurative paintings are not portraits of her. But in the grander scheme of things, the piece are a collective representation of her.

Earning an income from your exhibitions, even nationally juried exhibitions: Ask Questions and be informed.

    Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Tony Moffit’s Blog talks about the simplified Art Gallery Math to determine your income projection for the year. However, I feel my experiences have made me come up with deeper questions and considerations, concerning an artist’s income.

A huge problem I have is that a lot of the shows I enter seem to be more concerned with vanity than sales. Thus, I’ve learned to ask galleries who want to show my work the following questions:

    1) When was the last time your gallery sold a piece? Their answers are often surprising.

    2) What is the price range in which your artwork typically sells? This can help with what pieces you choose to show.

    3) Will they promote you and to whom? They often have outdated lists. Sometimes they want you to provide them with a list of names.

    4) What does the opening reception entail? One of the biggest surprises I’ve had is when a gallery asked me if I would bring something.

One nationally juried show curator yelled at me when I wanted to be informed. She told me that she’s been in nationally juried shows for ten years and has never sold a piece. Sometimes there are even greater surprises!

But the point is, it’s in the artists best interest to ask questions and be informed. Artist must take the reins of their own career, instead of relying on others for success.
