urig headAs iPads, MacBooks, 3-D movies and plasma televisions consume our world, has fine art become obsolete?

I’m sure some people would argue that the former are all examples of art. They would argue that although the medium has changed, fine art still exists. People might also mention that although less people go to museums today, many feature films, television shows and computer programs feature the fine art of the Renaissance, Ancient Egypt and Dark Ages (to name a few).

More traditional folks would argue that fine art is lost in this technologically-obsessed world. They would say that less young people are spending their time in museums, as they’re entertaining themselves at home with video games, laptops and televisions. They will say that in a society that worships technological advancement, there’s no place for fine art, as technology and art are mutually exclusive.

I agree with both sides to an extent. I think that not enough young people take an interest in the fine arts of centuries past. But I also think that fine art is not entirely lost on the youth. I just think that the artistic mediums have shifted. Today’s youth are less interested in Renaissance art and more interested in modern art. I don’t think that today’s problem is that fine art has become obsolete, but rather that people are unwilling to trust Art and recognize its investment opportunities. Art, in all of its forms, refreshes its observers’ eyes every day.

I think that too many people define art as paintings similar to those created by Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Raphael. Art is enchanting because it alive. It constantly reinvents itself, as it captures the zeitgeist. As long as we as a society are still creating something, fine art will never be obsolete. And as long as art exists, society will flourish.

I believe it is our duty as artists to capture people’s attention no matter where their interests lie. And then shake their world.
