Call Me

Call me was a fun painting with lots of challenging opportunities.  I had an original vision that I wanted to capture in paint. This thought was an ethereal image where foreground and background merged as one pattern with just enough detail in the facial area to separate the form from the rest of the painting. I loved the soft cotton like forms that the flowers formed in the tree to the unique color and light pattern from being outside with nature.

Painting with a painting knife the painting developed slowly from a thumbnail color studies to this. Working from a photo the color studies helped me to limit my color palette and direct the focus of the painting.

Light is the Stairway to Heaven

I always enjoyed that song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. But maybe they had some parts wrong in their song.

As an artist I would like to argue that light is understandably all God and that there is no darkness in it.  So while viewing my garden as light danced throughout and colors glowed even in the dark shadows because they were not totally void of light  in this painting. I had to think that this painting with its vertical pillars looked like a gateway, yes we all like those syfy movies with their gateways or portholes to other times or places, to Heaven. Even in the Bible there where a few transports. Peter finding himself in another place. Elisha and even Jesus himself transported to Heaven. Yes we call it ascended ( to move or go upward).

Anyways, the light is so magnificent against the darkness. Lights allure seems to go on forever and all colors, even though we see only a portion of the entire color spectrum bring  joy to our eyes and even spirit. Sunlight is so fiery, my eye fights to take in all the details and colors, so I try to capture a glimpse, even an abstract impression in my garden. I would like it if you can feel the heat, the warmth of the sunlight, as if you where there with me where I was painting.

Leisurely Walk

In my journey and study of paint it seems I have so many things in my head that I would like to explore. But I am slowly learning it is better to explore one thing at a time as not to confuse myself by juggling multiple concepts.

In this painting of the Leisurely Walk, I had a totally impressionist concept in mind before I began the painting. I wanted to paint the light almost abstractly as I feel it, with some areas more clear and bright and other light more peripheral and obscure. This was good to have a target, for when you have a target you can tell when you hit it. And when you hit it, the painting is finished.

I knew that from my recent studies that I wanted to use more greys since they seemed to add more air into paintings. I wanted to start with a simplified color palette and stay true to it as much as possible to add greater unity to the painting. I also wanted to be ever so conscious of creating the correct color but even more important was the correct value with the color, since value in a painting is so critical in holding everything together.

Preliminary painting development takes some of the anxiety out of painting. “Woman with Basket”

For as long as I can remember I have heard how beneficial doing pencil sketches, small thumbnails or color studies can benefit my work. But thinking I know better, I skip ahead missing these important steps.

Now I go back to these most important steps in developing a painting and find out how beneficial they are to my final painting.

It is a delicate balance between understanding aesthetics, composition and details. Every concern pulls you in a different direction. Balance is important in life and painting.

My inefficient process was that when I get involved with the idea of the finished painting I rush toward the details, many times forgetting some of the more important items like composition, design, and color flow.

All of these can easily be worked out in preliminary sketches and very small color studies. It actually takes some of the anxiety out of the painting process by not having to do all of this the first try, or having to balance all of these decisions in my head when I leave down each stroke of the paint.

I find I am more comfortable spending time on my painting knowing the direction provided by preliminary painting development. This work helps me to figure out things that I would have normally missed. Subtle adjustments done instinctively to forms in the rough would never had been seen when I get overwhelmed and caught up with detailing an intended direction of a finished painting.

One big thing I have learned, I am not sure why this has taken me so long, is that every painting I do is not worth keeping. Most are for learning, others mistakes, once in awhile I find one that I really like for some unexplained reason, but all lead up to a better understanding of my trade.

For this session, we chose to position the model completely in shadow. After positioning her, it seemed her head and face fell into a deeper shadow, which caused grays, teal grays and brown earthy colors to fill the scene.

My challenge with this piece was to match the deep tones of the scene. I wanted the painting to emerge from the background with somber, bluish-gray tones.

In retrospect, I could have taken a more direct approach to this piece. But I was initially unsure of how dark the tones had to be to hold the figure. Thus, I started painting lighter and continued to paint the piece until I acquired the deep tones. At the end of my painting session, I used Liquin glaze to deepen areas of the painting while allowing the color changes I had previously created to stand.

Painting the Model Live from the Garden and from Photos in a Group 1 – Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

I recently found a model in the most unlikely place: our bank. She had perfect features for painting, similar to those you see in Baroque Art. Even greater, she was a still model whom everyone enjoyed painting.

During my first session, I painted her in the shadow, quite similar to a Jeremy Lipking piece. For this painting, I allowed my emotional senses to guide me. I was quite pleased with the composition after our 3-hour painting session and critique, even though my piece did not have a completed background.

Luckily, I took pictures of the model in the same position in which I painted her during our first session. The next evening, I printed the images on a 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet and took them to the garden location, set up my paints and worked on the background of the piece. Going back and forth between the photographs and the garden, I painted as much of the background as I could within 3 hours.

During my second session, I struggled to complete the background. In my work, I had never been forced to choose between the real landscape and a photograph. Thus, it took me much longer to complete this piece. One thing I learned from the photo was that I hadn’t added enough medium tone to the heart of the painting. Adding this tone (being mindful to not destroy the piece’s coloration) unified the piece.

Overall, I’m learning from the other painters in my group. They’ve pushed and encouraged me. I would suggest that other artists form their own groups to paint.

Open Paint #2 – Plein Air with Live Model – Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

It was too hot for the model on our second evening, and unfortunately, I hadn’t thought of that problem until tonight. But thanks to the ingenuity of a fellow artist, who suggested a fan and shortened pose increments, we were able to accommodate her nicely. Eventually, the night air cooled us, making the heat a non-issue for the artists and model.

This evening I tried something different with my painting. I read in a book recently that when you return to a dried canvas, you can rub it with linseed oil to give it a wet look. I liked this technique, as covering a dried canvas with wet paint often bothers me.

I learned a lot this evening. By allowing the paint to suggest the form of my image, it helped my piece. I experimented with the simplified form of basic foliage. The burnt umber color I pushed with yellows, oranges, blues and Alizarin Crimson provided a nice color to the needed greens of the scene. The colors are more vibrant when painting outside.

By breaking the canvas up into small shapes, I added rhythm to the piece, and the direction of the rake handle placed the focus on the face of the woman tending her garden.

My final image’s likeness to the model surprised me because I was working quickly and loosely. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience of painting a model live outdoors in the garden, so we are lining up another model for next week.

Woman in the Garden Series – Studio – Original Oil Painting Blog by American Oil Painter Daryl Urig

Some of my fondest memories of childhood are of my mother working in her garden. It could have been her strong, ethereal connection during those moments, or maybe just the warm glow that laboring in the sun brings. Whatever it was, it imprinted a lasting memory of beauty in my mind.

One day, after observing my wife tending to our garden, I decided to bring my fond childhood memories to my artwork, and developed my “Women in the Garden” series. Each oil painting in this series depicts a woman doing different chores in the garden.

I used loose brush strokes and vibrant colors with highly textured flowers on the foreground to add space to paint the images in this series. By using this technique, I created my series in the same vein as the Impressionists, like Monet.

In 1867, Monet finished a painting, entitled “Women in the Garden,” that depicted various women, including his wife, Camile, doing a variety of activities in a garden. This piece demonstrated the techniques of Impressionist artists, like loose brush strokes, blurred boundaries and vibrant colors.

In creating my series, I drew inspiration from Monet. His use of loose brush strokes and vibrant colors resonated with my wife and mother’s casual encounters with their gardens. Like Monet, I chose to paint each piece on a sunny day to capture the warmth of beautiful women tending to their gardens.
