To stand out as a painter, your work has to have originality.
I have never wanted to copy an artist or an artist’s style or an artist’s technique. But what others do influences me. My premise for painting is that I am making personal marks that, in sequence, tell a story. An idea starts in my head and evolves and manifests itself in some way onto my canvas.
If I stay true to myself, a Personal Representation of Who I Am (PROWIA) will emerge. My hope is that I continue to explore and develop this PROWIA and allow it to continually evolve. I don’t want to say style. Style seems to me to be something you acquire and never leave.
I have admired Pablo Picasso since I was in the 4th grade; although I do not like everything he has accomplished. I do admire his PROWIA; how it was forever changing, manifesting and growing. When I am old, I want like so many artists before me, to have a young mind and still inspire new viewers, even new painters.
I like to optimize whatever I am doing – improve it – make it more efficient, more fun, and more motivating. Constantly creating new targets to hit. If you do not have a target, you will not hit anything.
In the middle of doing my Painting a Day, I saw my first glimpse of PROWIA. Like a unique signature, it was starting to emerge. This is my direction for my newest paintings. If I were going to title it, what would I call it? Is it Contemporary Realism, American Impressionism, Sculpted Paint, or American Colorist? You tell me.

The discipline of painting daily has helped me speed up my development as an oil painter. My newest personal challenge is to continue as an American Daily Painter. I want to give myself time to paint larger canvases and evolve my PROWIA. So now I am calling myself A Daily Painter, A Painting (or more) A Week.
