An artist e-mailed me last week with this question:

I work in advertising, but miss painting and drawing. What can I do?

I am sure there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way. So I e-mailed him back and wanted to share my response with my loyal readers.

Here goes:

I am glad to hear you are working in the field, this is a very good first step. I worked in the design field for about 20 years.

You need to do what you love while you hold down your job. If you really want anything you will always find time to fit it in. It really is just prioritizing your schedule.

Taking a class, being part of a group, or starting your own group is a good way to have people around you that may be encouraging. But it really just comes down to you putting in the effort and feeling good about what you do.
