The painting knife allows me to create space so much easier than a brush. Though the principle fits well with a brush also.
I love to push paint outside of the lines. Getting out of the box. The outlines that restrict and encumber artists so much. Then I can come back painting a portion of the negative shape and adjust the edge to be what I need it to be in space, soft, hard or lost . Or just swipe downward with my painting knife, merging both foreground and background shapes together as one.
It seems that the painting knife forces me to paint only shapes, as I believe painting is the painting of shapes. Where with a paint brush I may be tempted to be linear, drawing lines, then filling them in.
