When the 9 different paintings are combined they create one image in which 2 opposing forces are held together by one symbol. The 2 forces are the homes in the backyard of the farm and the disfigured tree holds them together. Although these structures are separated, they must co-exist in this backyard The divided canvases further express the division prevalent in the painting.
