It was a hot day at the Marina, though the heat was unnoticed as I was in “My Artist Zone” painting with my painting knife.
I have always enjoyed nautical paintings. Painted plein air, I started with a small oil sketch that quickly set up my color scheme and design. When I go strait for the painting without this preliminary oil sketch that I usually paint on a 6 x 4 inch gessoed panel, I end up painting too much detail, and the painting will lack overall color and design. I was pleased with the overall color and lighting, compared to what I brought back from photos that I took while on location. My color was so much more interesting while the values seem to have a space. The photo was very flat and uninteresting.
I wanted to catch what my eyes sees in a glance. Some point of detail, then everything else seems to be more abstract and unrecognized shapes and form as the eye sees peripherally. The polls created an interesting rhythm through the painting and notice they where not all painted the same. Definitely Alla Prima, you can see the wet into wet paint was almost thick and gooey which visually emphasized the heat.
