It was very hot this last week in July on Hilton Head Island SC. But not so hot as to interrupt my enthusiasm to paint plein-air all the rich colors available in this area of the hemisphere. (Though maybe hot enough to have sense to paint early while there is some remembrance of the cooler evening.)
It is a very unique experience light and how the colors change by where we are on the globe. Maybe someone would like to explain this for us. As artist we can enjoy the visual differences and the challenges it presents.
Painting from just off the expressway I could see in the distance the two trawlers harbored on the water side of the Sea Trawler Restaurant. You could see areas where the water is filling the land to a few hours shy of high tide. Patches of marsh showing through. The sun was strong and dazzling, reflecting colors and brightness off of the water like I was inside of a glass prism.
The painting knife aided my painting by helping to lay in rich unaltered colors and suggestive interactions of shapes and air.
This November I will return to instruct two plein-air workshops. Please see website for details.
