There are many fine opportunities across this great country of ours. So many in fact that I find it overwhelming and confusing trying to figure out which ones to attend. The Blessing of the Fleet is a very interesting ceremony that happens in Darien Georgia to Bless the shrimp boats before they start the year of shrimping. In fact it is the blessing of the largest working shrimping fleet on the East Coast.
Since I enjoy painting shrimp boats so much it seemed like a good personal fit for me. I am also planning a plein air workshop for the artist group in Darien the week before the event. I hope to see you their. It is an event you will surely not want to miss.
This painting and study where based on my experience in Darien Georgie when I visited on my returning from New Smyrna. It was like a trip back in time for me. The old town had so much character and of what I really enjoy, shrimp boats and a nice layout of the harbor. I found people helpful and nice.
The painting was painted with only painting knife started with a small study working from photos. From that I went forward with confidence and large areas of color working from only my study. Then painting again from the photo to enhance some details. I enjoy a painting when it feels like a painting that expressing my feelings. The painting knife helps me to not over detail but simplify my expression. I cannot overly detail.
I wanted to express something about the Blessing of the Fleet, so it seemed to make sense to me to have this huge sky touch down on one of its fleet. Maybe I am a little bit of a romantic here. It just felt good. Using dramatic lighting and strong graphic use of colors to artfully play with a scene from Darien.
