It was love at first sight. When I came across this site, I knew I had to paint it. It was 9 am, and the orange-yellow glow of the early morning sun shimmered across the landscape. There was an “S” pattern in the hillside above the farm, which drew contrast from the old farmhouse.
I initially painted a horizontal rough color study on a 6” x 4” gesso-panel . But I quickly realized a vertical impression of the scene was more inspiring. Thank goodness I did the initial color study before painting my larger piece!
After saving my painting, I was excited to paint the larger scene from photographs I had taken in Brookville. My giddiness helped me pour energy into my painting back in my studio.
As a side note, I haven’t decided whether I like painting a piece in full from a photograph. I read once that you can only start paintings plein air, but can and should finish them in the studio. After painting this summer, I understand the benefits of finishing paintings in a studio, as I used the studio to refine the many plein air paintings I completed this summer. But as the winter looms, I can only paint in my studio from sketches and photos I have accumulated for the coming months.
Readers, what do you think about painting a piece entirely from a photograph?
